Our HERING RCPS Reactivation Clay Polishing System is an ideal base oil finishing treatment for oils that have been pre-treated by vacuum distillation or wipe-film evaporation or suchlike front end processes. The system uses the specially manufactured HERING PHÖNIX clay as an adsorbent which can be reactivated and reused up to 500 times before needing to be replaced. Our RCPS clay finishing treatment is a low operating cost, moderate capital investment alternative to other base oil finishing treatment methods which rewards you with high quality group I and group II base oils.

Lube oil finishing treatment is required to produce high quality base oils from high viscosity oil distillates

Lube oil re-refining and high quality base oil production are the highest arts of oil processing. High viscosity oil distillates – such as those derived during waste oil recycling – have a complex set of interdepending properties which define their quality for your customer. To achieve the best product possible, a distillation treatment is not enough. You need to use a subsequent base oil finishing treatment. This treatment step eliminates unstable sulfurized and oxidized compounds, gets rid of odorous components and confers a clear, light color – finally reaching a water white color depending on the number of passes – to the oil to reach an oil quality that is considered as a high refining standard.

HERING RCPS Reactivation Clay Polishing System offers a low capital base oil finishing treatment to produce group I and group II base oils

Traditionally, there are two groups of base oil finishing treatment processes: clay based base oil finishing treatments and catalytic hydro treatments. For many plant operators, hydro finishing incurs too high capital expenses and is potentially too dangerous given the use of hydrogen under high temperatures and extreme pressures. Traditional clay based finishing treatments and the old acid-clay processes require much lower capital investments, but produce a lot of waste which poses an environmental problem as it must be treated by the disposal companies prior to disposal. Here, our HERING RCPS clay finishing system is the perfect solution to provide you with the best of both worlds. Our system yields high quality group I & group II base oils while requiring moderate capital investments and producing low amounts of waste that can be directly disposed at a local landfill without pretreatment. This makes the HERING RCPS clay finishing treatment system an excellent economic & environmental proposition for your finishing treatment and desulfurization needs.

Our reactivation clay finishing treatment adds value to reclaimed oils by improving color and sulfur content as well as by removing odors

High quality base oils not only have to meet the minimum standards of the API norm regarding viscosity index, saturated constituents and sulfur content – they also have to be excellent in terms of color, odor and oxidation stability. Our HERING RCPS Reactivation Clay Polishing System will help you enhance your overall oil quality. The lube oil polishing plant uses an adsorption type process to remove any unwanted compounds from the oil. Due to the polar nature of the adsorbent, the system is especially effective on undesirable polar components within the oil. The HERING Reactivation Clay Polishing System, thus, improves the color, odor, and sulfur content of your oil and rewards you with high quality group I and group II base oils. In addition, the HERING RCPS clay finishing treatment achieves an increase in oil stability because only trace amounts of aromatics and other impurities remain in the finished base oils. This increase in shelf-life is an added benefit of our clay polishing plant.

The RCPS’s specially manufactured HERING PHÖNIX RED clay can be reused several hundred times before being replaced

Unlike traditional clay finishing processes, the HERING RCPS is based upon several banks of active columns containing our specially manufactured HERING PHÖNIX RED high adsorbency clay. The HERING PHÖNIX RED clay is manufactured to yield a high surface area and high thermal stability material with excellent chemical properties. The physical characteristics of this special type of clay enable it to be reactivated by our clay polishing system. This makes it possible to reuse the PHÖNIX clay for several hundred cycles before it needs to be replaced. The reactivation capabilities of our RCPS in conjunction with the HERING PHÖNIX RED clay result in operating cost advantages compared to conventional bleaching clay finishing treatments. In addition, the used active material of our RCPS can be disposed at a conventional landfill after its lifetime making the RCPS lube oil finishing process an environmentally friendly base oil polishing treatment. For those that want to get rid of all types of clay in their waste oil recycling process, we specifically developed the HERING PHÖNIX GREEN. It is a 100% natural mineral that has been physically improved to yield a high surface area adsorbent material with similar properties to conventional clay, but without using any chemicals or chemical processes. The HERING Reactivation Clay Polishing System can treat oil flow rates up to 27,000 liters per hour

The HERING RCPS reactivation clay finishing treatment system can be supplied in oil processing capacities ranging from 50 liters per hour for a laboratory setup to 27,000 liters per hour for a medium size re-refining plant. The RCPS is especially suited for low and medium capacity plants as an excellent alternative to hydrotreating systems for base oil finishing treatment. We can supply our HERING RCPS lube oil finishing treatment plant either in conjunction with a non-cracking evaporator front-end as our HERING WORP waste oil recycling plant or as an add-on or retrofit to an existing re-refining plant. The HERING RCPS oil polishing system is perfectly suited to replace old acid-clay processes. As acid-clay re-refining process are becoming banned around the world, we can customize the ideal HERING RCPS setup to seamlessly substitute your existing acid-clay treatment with our lube oil finishing treatment.

Reactivation Clay Polishing System

The RCPS® Series of reactivation clay polishing systems from HERING provide an economical alternative to hydrogen treatment plants as a means of adding value to a re-refined lube oil. Designed as an add-on or retro-fit (back-end) to distillation systems, the plant is applicable to all types of oil refineries as a final polishing stage. We also supply the RCPS® as a full HERING WORP® waste oil recycling plant including evaporation front-end. Our HERING RCPS® Series improves waste oil distillates in terms of color, sulfur content and odor and, thus, leads to a more valuable oil product. The input oil is upgraded via an adsorption type process to remove any unwanted chemical substances from the treated oil.

The system is especially effective on undesirable polar components within the oil. The RCPS® has the ability to eliminate sulfur from 2000 PPM to less than 300 PPM in a single pass. Processing oil through the RCPS results in an oil that is stable against oxidation over any measured timescale – this increase in shelf-life is an added benefit of the reactivation clay polishing system. The Viscosity Index is not degraded by the clay polishing system so if a Group II oil is fed into the system, then the RCPS® will produce an enhanced Group II oil at the outlet.

The RCPS will process light or medium lube oil, 150N, and will improve the colour to an average better than Saybolt +16. Odour is reduced to non-detectable/barely detectable. Sulfur is reduced from 2000 PPM to < 300PPM. All specifications are input oil dependent. The RCPS is capable of any throughput on a continuous basis. There is an option to increase the throughput provided that the Upgrade Option is selected at the time of order.

The system will also process 220SN but at a lesser throughput. Extra processing time may be needed, and this product will have to be heated to reduce viscosity. Reactivation time per bank is also expected to increase with this stream.

Polishing your high viscosity oil distillates with the RCPS® Series provides you with:

  • Low operating costs and initial capital investments compared to other finishing treatments.
  • Flexible operating modes – Parallel mode operation is single-pass, least contact time, fastest processing. Series mode operation simulates triple-pass, most contact time, better quality oil.
  • Modular system ensures flexible layouts while all modules can be shipped inside a 40-foot high cube container for reduced shipping and handling costs.

    Unattended Oil Polishing Operation

  • Full client involvement during the manufacture, from engineering approval through to start-up.
  • Dual gas scrubber allows for integration of exhaust into front-end refinery to minimize points of emission for environmental permit.
  • All global voltages and frequencies available.
  • Low oil losses as part of waste becomes feedstock for front-end refinery.
  • All waste created by RCPS® is classified as standard industrial waste leading to low environmental costs.
